5 Tips - Applying For Jobs

Once upon a time I worked as a Recruitment Advisor. As much as the long hours and constant phone calls were tiring, the job taught me so many valuable lessons. I'm going to put my recruitment head on and share some of these with you all.

1. Include a cover letter where possible.

This should be a summary of why you are the best applicant for the job and it will help your application to stand out over other applications. Your cover letter should be to the point without rambling, and it should highlight your key achievements (which can then be further detailed in your interview).

2. Tailor your application to the job ad.

It is good to have a generic CV/cover letter saved however employers will be able to tell if it hasn't been adapted to suit the position you are applying for. Refer to the capabilities & responsibilities detailed in the job ad to help fit your experience & strengths into your application.

3. Have the confidence to use "I" instead of "we".

The employer wants to hear about why YOU would be right for the job, not the people you've worked on team projects with. Yes, you might read it and cringe if you are not the kind of person who shouts from the rooftops about how great you are, but the employer won't be impressed with "we did this, we achieved this, we we we." They want to know about you!

4. Proof read.

Spell check is a given. It is also worth while taking the time to proof read your application. It's not the end of the world if you double a word by accident however when reading through applications, sometimes it is really obvious to tell who has taken the time to double check their work and who hasn't.

5. For the love of Beyonce get a decent email address.

bigboy69@ohdear.com, footballclub@nothanks.com and alwayspissed@riot.com will put people off. Unless you're applying to work for LADbible or something.
