TOTM - "Be Kinder to your Vagina"

My period has never been nice to me. PMS, severe cramps, heavy bleeding, being sick, passing out are just a few of the digs that ol mother nature has thrown at me. Since my early teens I have fought tirelessly to try and get my monthly's to a manageable place and eventually at the age of 21 I contacted a gynaecologist for help, rather than a health centre GP. Finally after all those years I was able to get some help and started to see a difference in how I was feeling on a monthly basis.

Jump forward to now at the ripe old age of 27 (lol) I'm in a place where the majority of my symptoms have gone, and my cramps are manageable - however the one thing that I still have a bit of a struggle with is the heaviness.

Just after my last period, TOTM kindly sent me a product to try out and for the first time ever I was actually looking forward to my next period. I know - when I mentioned to my sister and my bestie that I was looking forward to my period they had to throw me a few little security questions, like you get when you phone a call centre, to make sure it was really me they were speaking to.

I opted to test out the Organic Cotton Night Pads with wings.

A little more on TOTM

Free from chlorine, pesticides and chemical fertilisers, our organic cotton tampons, sanitary towels and pantyliners don’t contain perfume and, unlike some, they won’t leave any fibres behind. They’re also non-GM, chemical and pesticide-free, so don’t give the planet much cause to complain either. If that isn’t enough to convince you, then how about our unique subscription service? It’s tailored to deliver everything you need at a time of the month that suits you.

My Experience

I thought the best way for me to really judge how I got on would be to keep a daily diary but to be honest, after night four I decided to stop because I was noting the same things, so I'll sum it up instead.

When I first opened the package I can remember thinking "oh god, these are pretty thin" and I had my doubts - in my experience, night time pads were closer to the size of a boat than these lil things.

When I'm on, my sleep is unsettled to say the least. It's common for me to have leakage and I always sleep in the one uncomfortable position to try minimise this. I almost always have to get up at 5/6am to change product and as a result get a broken sleep and often can't drift off again.

Guess what I didn't have to do when I was using the TOTM product?! Awww yiss.

On the first night I was still doubtful so stuck to my routine period sleeping position (which btw, is face down, rigid af) but I was surprised to wake up at 8am. I flapped around dramatically to check the bed but everything seemed hunky dory. Right enough, I got up and away to change and although I had bled heavily, there was no leakage at all.

So I started to be a chancer. I really wanted to put the product to the test so when it came to bed time I was being a little rebel. Wait til you hear the riotous acts I committed over the next 6 nights.

I stuck my leg out of the covers. I slept in pants only. I flipped around during the night to my hearts content. I stayed in bed until 10am one morning. Not a single drop escaped.

I've found the one.

No irritability, no leakage, no feeling like I was wearing a nappy. I even used a couple of spare pads as a safety net at work - I work 12 hour shifts and need all the help I can get - and I was able to walk about without the fear that people could *hear* me walking about. I didn't have to keep asking my friend to do a sly check as I walked away ahead (we've all done this). They're much kinder to my body and gentler on the planet. I'd say this is a winning situation all round. I am a convert. Sign me up. Well don't actually because I've done that myself, but you get what I mean.

How do you cope with heavy, hard to manage periods?

Thank you TOTM for gifting me these samples to try out.

  1. This is what I need in my life! I am exactly the same when it comes to periods. I get them hard and it's not fun at all. Heavy bleeding, lots of cramps, passing out few times from pain, sickness and all that jazz. I really do hope that it will change one day. It's like a dreadful week for me.

    1. :( Totally know what you mean. I would love to be one of those people that sails through their period with ease alas I don't think that will ever be the case, just have to do my best to get through it.

  2. These sound amazing. I so relate to sleeping in uncomfortable positions to keep everything in check, though mine is rigid on my side and as a result I wake up with the worst pain in my hip :( And it's not like I'm trying to have kids right now, so the whole thing is completely unnecessary. *dramatic sigh*

Haha i bet my friends would throw me security questions if I said I was looking forward to my period haha :) I also really struggle with leaking at night which is really awkward especially when I'm staying at a friends house ! 1. Definitely recommend them! I'm such a home bunny so it's rare I'll stay out but if the situation ever arises I'd feel much better prepared equipped with these. xx

  4. Oh my gosh, these sound amazing! I'm definitely gonna be looking into getting some of these :) I've just had my contraceptive implant removed and I'm dreading learning to deal with periods at night again, so these being so leak-proof have got me excited! I'd have never imagined I'd be excited over pads! :D
