A Mouse in Amsterdam

Two weeks before my boyfriend & I's annual leave from work we decided to book a last minute trip to Amsterdam. Neither of us had been before and due to me being a total homebody, as well as having the whole cat thing going on, going away for a week or two was kinda out of the question. A city break relatively close to home felt like the perfect option.

We were there for three days/two nights which felt like the right amount of time to tick off the things we wanted to do. Thanks to my boyfriend's travels for work, he had built up some Club Carlson hotel points so we were able to stay in the Park Plaza Victoria Amsterdam right in the heart of the city centre for a grand total of £0! Not too shabby for Rachel.

Tourist Time!

My absolute favourite part of the trip was our visit to the Anne Frank Museum. Stop calling me a party princess please, I know it. I booked tickets online pretty much right after I'd booked the flights so rather than having to wait in the queue that circled the building we got to shimmy on in. Seeing the diary and the bookcase irl gave me goosebumps. There was also an American dad talking his kids through the museum scenes in The Fault in Our Stars, much to their annoyance and embarrassment. Wonderful stuff.

We also: played the part of tourists to the max and got involved in some canal boat tour action / visited Vondelpark - probably the most chilled out park in the history of the world / had a *cough* mature visit to the sex mueseum / had a wonder through the red light district.

Tips:

If possible, visit through the week. Saturday night in the centre of Amsterdam is panic attack central. Nothing like screaming "I NEED TO GET OUT OF HERE RIGHT NOW" in your boyfriend's ear to add a little romantic touch to your trip.

Buy your train tickets before you try to get on the train. Luckily I'd been told to do this before we went however we saw people miss their train because they hadn't done so!

Take comfy trainers.  I feel like Amsterdam really gets me. A whole city with like zero hills to have to walk up. Amazing. However my flats still kicked me in and I ended up having to go over and above our spending money to buy a new pair of trainers to save my soles. Also, because I had my fuck-it-I'm-on-holiday head on, I went for holographic Adidas Superstars because I am a magpie and couldn't resist the shiny details. In my defence though I fit into child sizes so didn't have to pay for adult sizes.

Don't mess with the cyclists. I can still hear bike bells pinging in my ears. Legit if you step out onto the road when there isn't a green man a cyclist will appear as if from nowhere and you'll be lucky to keep your toes. Respect them like you would the sea. You have been warned.

Have you ever been to Amsterdam?
I think for me, until I find myself in a better place with my anxiety, it will be UK breaks for the next wee while at least.
If you have any recommendations I'd love to hear them!

  1. Yay! I'm glad you two got to get away for a few days :) Amsterdam sounds lovely, and it sounds like you got to see all the great tourist-y bits :) And it sounds like you were super prepared! I'm impressed, it's hard to plan everything and be so prepared in such a short amount of time, haha. And a free hotel stay?! Not bad!
